About Us

Hishuk-ish tsawalk means everything is one, everything is connected

Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council has been building the capacity to embark on an important long-term study focused on understanding and improving health for Nuu-chah-nulth families and children. This project is the Indigenous Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (I-HeLTI). It has been developed by and for Nuu-chah-nulth people and communities and embeds traditional Nuu-chah-nulth Knowledge into its goals and plans.

This research project focuses on understanding how to reduce diseases such as type-2 diabetes, obesity, and heart disease along with mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, substance misuse and suicide.

By measuring the health of children, mothers, families, and communities over time, we can understand what actions, issues, and choices contribute to good health or disease over a lifetime. This information can support communities, families, and individuals in making informed health-related decisions. This type of information can also help guide programs and policies.

The Hishuk-ish tsawalk I-HeLTI project is supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
