How we were governed and how our communities existed quite often involved the chief who was the centre of all attention. Observations of early explorers said that Nuu-chah-nulth was one of the wealthiest people on this planet. The existence of governing was always there, the respect that we had towards our chief, the dividing of food, which was the chief's authority, and he was decisive and definite about his instructions. December and January our people would get together and the ceremonies would take place. This was governing at its best during these great ceremonies. Our chiefs would bring out their wolves as it's called. These wolves were the law and order of governance and they lived almost like a secret society. At one time in our legends and stories it is said that animal world, forest world, and human world all conversed at one time in the very early days of creation. Iisaak is the respect that exists between our people and the animal world. How we were governed and how our communities existed quite often involved the chief who was the centre of all attention. For us to learn from each other is quite important as the bigger society has to grasp on to learning from another culture. Today, environmentalists are paying a lot of attention to First Nations and what they believe and how they handle resources. We have a lot of neighbours that were not treated well especially the animal world. Everyday we lose but then again we have to learn, hopefully in this case by our mistakes.
