Language and culture was removed from the Nuu-chah-nulth people through the banishment of the Potlatch ceremony. As a result we as Nuu-chah-nulth face community breakdown. It is time to bring back the language and teachings because our language is who we are and what we are. The teachings are within the language. Bringing back the language involves unity with each other. We learned English so we can learn Nuu-chah-nulth. We need healthy teachers to teach the language and we must not laugh or mock someone who is trying to learn. To me I am reminded of how we used to be treated in residential school if we spoke Nuu-chah-nulth. We have to be grateful that someone is learning and be mindful of where these behaviours and attitudes come from when we laugh or tease someone who is trying. Our children are our future and for them to be healthy we need to be healthy. I am waiting for the people to come and learn and I am eager to teach.
