The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council stands with the Boushie family as injustice for Indigenous peoples meets a modern day high
Not guilty verdict brings to the surface Canada’s systemic issue of discrimination against Indigenous peoples
(Port Alberni, B.C.) The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council (NTC) are again disheartened by the justice system and the not guilty verdict announced in the Colton Boushie case on Friday.
We stand with the Boushie family in their time of need and grieve with them in the loss of a precious young man, and share their outrage that Gerald Stanley walked free after killing Colten.
We stand in solidarity with other Indigenous organizations who are asking for an improved justice system, appeal of the lack of conviction, and to have a justice council composed of indigenous people and experts provide strategic advice to the attorney general on how to ensure that Canada's legal system is fair and free of all discrimination. There is much work to be done to eradicate racism across this country to ensure there are no more senseless killings. The time for change is now.
As protests occur across the country, the NTC hopes the Canadian government is paying attention. Discrimination against our Indigenous people will no longer be tolerated. We ask for immediate action of the Federal and provincial governments to change the rules on juries, and other flawed processes.
The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council send our prayers and strength to the Boushie family and their community. We hope you find peace, closure and justice for Colton soon.
